Transporters protest bus crew’s thrashing

FAISALABAD, Feb 6: Scores of drivers and conductors plying buses on inter-city routes on Thursday blocked traffic outside the Chiniot bazaar to protest against torture of a bus crew by some policemen.

Reports said conductor Muhammad Asif of a bus (FS-3955) demanded fare from a passenger, who identified himself as a policeman and refused to pay. This led to brawl between the conductor and the passenger.

Near Police Lines and Rescue-15 centre, the policeman got down from the bus and beat the conductor. He called his colleagues, who snatched keys from driver Muhammad Shahid and thrashed him and the conductor. The policemen also pelted stones on the bus, breaking its windows and seats.

Meanwhile, employees of various transport companies came to the crew’s rescue and shifted the injured to the nearest hospital. However, a police team rushed to the hospital and took the injured driver and conductor to Kotwali police station for investigation.

Reacting to it, the drivers and conductors of other buses blocked traffic and chanted slogans against the police till the city superintendent police assured action against the accused policemen.

A transport company manager, while talking to newsmen at the site of incident, alleged that some policemen were creating problems for them for the last couple of weeks.

He also alleged that the Thursday’s incident was a part of this conspiracy against the transporters, and demanded an impartial inquiry and registration of case against the policemen.

Talking to newsmen on Thursday, Superintendent Jail Saeed Ahmed Qureshi said that on the directives of DSJ, local judicial magistrate visited jail and ordered the release of Saiful Maluk, Liaquat, Imran, Shanzada, Tariq, Mehmood, Manzoor, Asghar Ali, Faisal, Jawed Iqbal, Imran, and Majid Ali.
