PESHAWAR, Jan 21: A joint action committee of the university teachers association has called for a boycott of classes on Wednesday (today) to express anguish over the proposed model university ordinance.
The decision was taken at a meeting held on Tuesday which was attended by the representatives of the Peshawar University Teachers Association, Agricultural University Teachers Association, Engineering University Teachers Association, Peshawar University School Teachers Association and Islamia College Teachers Association.
The JAC in a press release said that the teachers would boycott classes on Wednesday and a procession would be taken out from the TCC, which would be addressed by the leaders of the teachers.
The press release also said that a countrywide protest day would be observed against the ordinance on Jan 29 to press the government to postpone its implementation.
The meeting expressed concern over the proposed ordinance, saying that it was aimed at depriving the poor students of their right to get free education. It said that the ordinance was being implemented at the behest of the IMF and the World Bank. It said under the ordinance the teachers would be made subservient to a few individuals, who would make a mess of the education in the country.
The teachers were informed that a meeting of all representatives of country’s universities would be held in Peshawar in the first week of February, where further programmes of protest demonstration and strategies would be chalked out.
