Smallest chips

TOKYO, Jan 9: Japanese hi-tech giant Toshiba said Thursday it will start production of the world’s smallest mass produced semiconductors this spring.

The physical size of the 90 nanometer semiconductors will be roughly half that of 130 nanometer chips, which are currently the smallest mass produced chips, said Toshiba spokesman Makoto Yasuda.

“The speed (of the 90 nanometer chips) will vary. But they will generally have improved performance (over 130 nanometer chips),” Yasuda said, adding they would consume less power.—AFP
