KARACHI, Nov 23: Abdul Rashid Memon, secretary fisheries Sindh, on Friday, said the provincial government had proposed that the federal government hand over to it the Korangi Fisheries Harbour (KFH).

Talking to newsmen at an iftar-dinner hosted by the Karachi Fisheries Harbour Authority in honour of the Nazim, Naib Nazims and Town Nazims elected from fishermen’s localities, he expected that the federal government would inform Sindh of its decision in that regard in two to three months.

He said to make the KFH operational the Sindh government would not have to incur expenditure.

It would enhance the income of the province from the fees to be charged from trawlers or boats on their catch arriving at the KFH.

He said there was no cold-storage facilities for preserving the catch. To construct such facility much time would be required, he added.

On the limit dispute between Sindh and Balochistan provinces, he said there was no restriction on fishing in Balochistan. If fishermen wanted fishing beyond Sindh waters they were required to pay the fee prescribed by Balochistan.

Earlier, Commodore Syed Tayyab Naqvi, chairman KFHA, urged the elected representatives of fishermen communities to undertake fishermen welfare projects. He regretted that the KFH was non-operational for 6 years.

Haji Shafi Jamot, vice-chairman FCS, asked elected Nazims to give more importance to the welfare of fishermen. He stressed the need of planning for the development of fishermen localities at the coastal areas of Sindh.

Nazims and Naib Nazims also spoke on the occasion. A total of 26 Nazims, 22 Naib Nazims and 4 town Nazim have been elected from fishermen localities in Karachi.—PPI
