KARACHI, Dec 23: Supply of electricity to most areas of the city was severed soon after rain and gales had arrived here on Monday.

Supply to most of the affected areas was restored after a couple of hours. However, it remained suspended for some of them.

These areas included: Kausar Town, Malir; Block no 17, Federal B Area; Block no 5, Shah Faisal Colony; Block nos 18 and 19, Gulistan-i-Jauhar; and, some parts of Clifton.

In these areas, wires had snapped due to the forceful winds which accompanied the rain. A few of the KESC’s equipment had also developed faults. The KESC’s staff were looking into these problems till late in the evening.

Residents of Kausar Town told Dawn that supply had not been restored by 8pm. Some people of Federal B Area said electricity supply had been restored late in the evening, but voltage was extremely low.

Some people of Shah Faisal Colony said they were doing without electricity. Some residents of block numbers 18 and 19 of Gulistan-i-Jauhar spoke of the same problem.

According to a spokesman for the KESC, last year more than a hundred feeders had tripped after the rain. But, this time only 20 to 25 feeders tripped.

In addition, there were some cases of wire-snapping. Most of these problems were resolved within three hours. Consequently, 90 per cent of the cases had been attended to successfully by 5pm.

He said the KESC staff were busy in dealing with the left-over cases. They would soon be resolved, he claimed.
