Plain sailing for Aqeel and Asim

PESHAWAR, Dec 20: Top seed and Pakistan No.1 Aqeel Khan and second seeded Asim Shafiq gained convincing victories in the men’s singles of the CAS Khyber Open Tennis Championship played on Friday.

Davis Cupper Aqeel exhibited tremendous form against young Murtaza in the 65 minutes battle.

Aqeel won the match 6-2 and 6-1 in one-sided affairs. Asim Shafiq, a former Pakistan No.1 and currently, No.2, defeated Iqbal Khan 6-3 and 6-4.

Shehzad Samad, another upcoming and talent youngsters, who was also the member of Pakistan Davis Cup team, from NWFP secured an easy victory over Aftab Anwar. The score was 6-1 and 6- 1.

Young Inam Gul of PAF also advanced to the next round overcoming Gul Hameed by 2-1. The score was 6-0, 4-6 and 6-2.

Gul Hameed only gave Inam tough resistance in the second set which he won by 4-6.

Pakistan team coach Rasheed Malik defeated Umar Ayaz by 6-2, 6-1 while young Wakeel Khan of PAF beat Amjad Khan by 4-6, 6-4 and 6-3. The match lasted for 80 minutes.

In the other matches of the men’s singles, Munir Ashaq beat Israr Gul 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, Aurangzeb downed Iftikhar, Mehmood overwhelmed Muhammad Shakeel, Inamullah crushed Mahir Nisar, Fayyaz Khan outclassed Muhammad Shafiq, Kamran Khalil blasted Muhammad Babar, Shehzad Khan overpowered Ikram-ul-Haq and while Shahid Khan routed Saeed-ul-Haq.

OTHER RESULTS:

Under-18: Sheikh Abdul Asghar bt Shahyar Niazi 6-1 and 6-3; Tanveer Ashaq bt Omer Latif 6-2 and 6-2; Farman Ullah bt Yousaf Latif 6-4, 6-2, Shahrukh Niazi bt Imran Maqbool 6-1 and 6-2.

Under-14: Khurram Nazir bt Zakirullah 6-2, 6-2, Omer Babar bt Fahad Ali 6-3, 6-1.—APP
