Arrest warrants for 11 cops: Fake encounter

GUJRANWALA, Nov 21: The Anti-Terrorism Court No 2, Gujranwala, on Wednesday issued arrest warrants to 11 policemen, including an SHO, on the charge of killing two Christians in a fake encounter.

James Masih had alleged in his plaint that Ladheywala Warraich SHO Liaquat Ali, SIs Muhammad Anwar, Fiaz Ahmad, ASI Shaukat Hayat and constables Muhammad Sadiq, Manzoor Ahmad, Muhammad Aslam, Nasir Ahmad, Muhammad Saleem, Din Muhammad and Safdar Ali caught Abid Masih and Shafqat Masih on suspicion of theft and later killed them in a fake encounter on Jan 11, 1999.

SERVICE ROAD: The district council has referred to the Punjab government to construct the service road from Gondlanwala Chowk to Chand Da Qila by-pass Chowk along the GT Road and complete work within the stipulated period.

At a meeting held here on Wednesday with district Naib Nazim Haji Gohar Zaman in the chair, treasury and opposition members said the service road was being constructed in two phases.

They said the first phase construction work of service road from Rawalpindi by-pass chowk to Gondlanwala chowk on the GT Road and widening of the national highway was going on for the last few months.

Some members proposed the service road should be constructed from Nigar cinema to Chand Da Qila by-pass Chowk instead from Gondlanwala Chowk to Chand Da Qila by-pass chowk in the second phase.

COMMITTEE: The district government has set up a price control committee headed by the district coordinating officer.

At a meeting held here on Wednesday under the chairmanship of DCO Iftikhar Ahmad, members of the district price control committee were nominated to control price hike and blackmarketing particularly in Ramazan. It is learnt that leaders of traders, lawyers and ulema were included in the price control committee.

MURDERED: A man and a woman were murdered by their rivals in different incidents in and around the city here on Wednesday.

Kishwar Bibi, the mother of six children, was on her way to Said Nagar village. Near a graveyard, accused Faryad Ahmad intercepted her and tried to rape her. The outlaw attacked her with knives when she offered resistance. She died on the spot.

Alipur Chattha police have registered a case and are investigating. Sabir Hussain was asleep in the house of his in-laws in Nat Kalan village, Ghakkhar town, when unidentified assailant shot him dead. The motive behind the murder could not be ascertained.

Police removed the body to the Wazirabad THQ Hospital for autopsy.
