KARACHI: Transporters threaten strike

KARACHI, Dec 12: The Karachi Transport Ittehad, an alliance of various transport associations, has threatened strike if the diesel prices are not reduced further to Rs17 per litre.

A meeting of the KTI, chaired by Syed Irshad Hussain Bukhari and attended by Malik Khalid Awan, Pir Burhanuddin, Haji Yarmuhammad, Ashraf Banglori and others, declared insufficient the reduction in diesel prices announced on November 15 and 30.

The transport leaders said that at the time of the fixation of the present fares, the rate of diesel was Rs17 which should be restored forthwith or they would be compelled to convene a meeting on December 15 and decide to observe a strike.

They also drew the attention of DIG traffic to the extortion of money by officials from rickshaw drivers and threatened to call all the rickshaws off the roads and park them in front of the Fitness Ground if no action was taken.—PPI
