KARACHI, Dec 9: Various parts of the city went without water on Monday owing to short supply of about 70 million gallons of water from Dhabeji (phase-II) pumping station and another 6mgd from Gharo pumping station.

Dhabeji station (phase-II) had stopped pumping at 11.30am on Sunday due to faults in power cables which had ultimately led to the power failure. Till 8pm on Sunday, power supply to the station could not be restored.

The KWSB officials said that the KESC had succeeded in rectifying one of the two cable faults at the pumping station by 9.30pm on Sunday. They indicated that the work for the removal of the other fault was in progress.

The city had already suffered a shortfall of more than 70mgd of water by Monday evening but the quantum of the supply to the city would further decrease by another 30mgd till Tuesday morning when the repair work is expected to be completed, according to the KWSB sources. They said that almost the entire city would face an acute water shortage on Tuesday as well.

In addition to short supply from Dhabeji pumping station, water supply to the city, to the tune of 6mgd, remained suspended from Gharo pumping station from 9.20am to 2.45pm on Monday owing to the tripping of its transformer, they said adding that the affected localities included Landhi, Korangi, Malir and Khokhrapar.

Complaints of persisting water shortage have also been received from different sectors of Orangi, Baldia, Shershah, Site, North Karachi’s sectors 11 C-1, 11 C-3, 11 C-4, 5 C-3 and 5-D, Shadman Town, Old Town, Ranchor Line, Kharadar, Mithadar, parts of Lyari, Pak Colony, Buffer Zone, Clifton’s blocks 2 and 5 and parts of Gulshan-i-Iqbal.

The other localities which went dry on Monday, as part of the KWSB plan of diverting Indus water to the areas hooked to the Hub Dam’s dried reservoir, included all blocks of Federal B Area, North Nazimabad, Buffer Zone, Nazimabad and Shadman Town.

Water supply to Clifton, Gizri, Delhi Colony, Punjab Colony, Shireen Jinnah Colony, Bhutta Village, Naval Dockyard, NORE-1 and GE Army installation would remain suspended on Tuesday.

The city’s major hospitals — Jinnah Post-graduate Medical Centre, National Institute of Child Health and National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases — would also go dry on Tuesday.

OVERFLOW: Filthy water, gushing from gutters, has flooded a number of streets of North Nazimabad’s block D.

People residing near Tayyaba Masjid in the block have complained that stinking and unhygienic environment prevailed in their locality for a week but the KWSB officials have failed to rectify the fault which had choked the sewerage lines.

Residents of Gulshan-i-Iqbal’s block 2 and Federal B Area’s block 15 have also made similar complaint.
