KARACHI, Feb 21: Two pedestrians sustained minor injuries when a boulder fell from Kati Pahari on Tuesday, police said.
Pirabad SHO Pervez Gujjar said that the incident took place at the junction of the Pirabad and Shahrah-i-Noor Jehan police stations early in the morning.
The injured were taken to a hospital from where they were released after treatment.
The SHO feared that a similar accident may happen again because a portion of the hill had been weakened due to water seepage from a recently laid pipeline.
Karachi Metropolitan Corporation’s director-general (technical services) Altaf G. Memon told Dawn that the boulder might have fallen from Kati Pahari because of construction or digging activity in the neighbourhood.
“The boulder fell straight to the ground upon passers-by as there is no slope on Kati Pahari,” he said, adding that such incidents, though of minor nature, had also occurred in the past.
Asked what steps the KMC intended to take to prevent such incidents in future, he said the boulders could be kept intact only after applying a particular solution to their layers and as that solution was not available in the country the KMC might import it.
A meeting to discuss the issue would be convened on Wednesday, he said.
