KARACHI, Nov 28: A suspected car hijacker was shot dead in an encounter in Mehmoodabad early Thursday morning, in what police claimed an encounter.

Police said that suspects travelling on a Suzuki pick-up (F-2271) were signalled to stop in Rahman Colony. Instead, they opened fire on police injuring one of the policemen, Peter John.

Police returned the fire resulting in the death of one of the suspects, Pervaiz Masih. He died on the spot. Siddiqi Masih was injured. Police arrested Rakash at the spot.

Three pistols were recovered from their possession.

The injured suspect has been admitted to Jinnah Post-graduate Medical Centre.

SUICIDE: A suspect committed suicide in police custody on Wednesday evening.

Police said that Tariq Hanif, aged 25, hanged himself in the bathroom of a lockup at the Sharifabad ACLC (Anti-car Lifting Cell) police station.

On Wednesday evening, just after Iftar, Tariq went into the bathroom. When he did not return for a long time, another suspect, lodged in the same lockup, peeped into the bathroom and found Tariq hanging from a window. He used his shalwar’s string to hang himself.

A magistrate was called in. The body was sent to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital for post-mortem.

Tariq, resident of Saeedabad, was jobless. He requested an acquaintance, Wajid Shah, resident of Landhi, that he give him his Toyota Hi-Lux to ply and the two men would share the profits.

Wajid agreed to the proposal and handed over the vehicle to Tariq on Oct 29. However, when Tariq did not contact him for three days, he went over to Tariq’s house in Saeedabad to inquire about the business. Tariq told him that bandits hijacked the vehicle from him. Wajid and Tariq lodged an FIR at Saeedabad police station in which Tariq named Faqira for the “crime.”

Police said that for one month police raided different places, including Sakrand in the interior of Sindh, to trace the vehicle, but all their efforts proved fruitless. Meantime, police arrested Faqira, but nothing concrete came up from his interrogation.

Police associated Tariq also with the investigations and took him into custody some time on Wednesday. During interrogation, he disclosed that he had sold the vehicle to Ali Nawaz, resident of Sakrand, but he did not receive any payment against it, as Nawaz played foul with him.

Police said that Tariq requested police not to disclose this information to Wajid. On Wednesday evening, when policemen were out for Iftar, Tariq went into the bathroom and committed suicide, police maintained.
