Incomplete returns: CBR plans action

ISLAMABAD, Nov 25: The Central Board of Revenue has decided to issue notices to all those taxpayers who have filed incomplete income tax returns during the current financial year.

A senior official in the CBR told Dawn that so far up to October 31, 2002, as many as 1.5 million tax returns were filed by the taxpayers with the income tax department. Of these most of the returns filed were incomplete, said the official.

He said the information sought through the form were left blank in most of the returns. He said this was in violation of law, which would be dealt with iron hand in future.

According to the official, the board has decided that from the next financial year no return of a taxpayer would be accepted in case it was found incomplete.

The CBR has also decided to change the procedure and requirements of the tax returns for the next year.

With making changes in the returns forms, it was hoped that the CBR would collect maximum information about the taxpayers, which would help in documenting the economy, added the official.
