Sugar mills in dilemma

KARACHI, Nov 23: A meeting of sugar mills in Sindh on Thursday discussed the scenario after the receipts of notices from Sindh Government.

A sugar mills owner said that the mills were in a fix after receiving notices from Sindh government.

He said that sugar mills cannot start crushing in the presence of piled up unsold stocks with them. “They have no money to purchase sugarcane from growers nor they can borrow from financial sector due to failure of repayment to their respective banks,” he said.

However, he did not give other details about the meeting particularly about the future line of action of the sugar industry in the backdrop of notices to mills.

The sugar mills in an extraordinary general meeting had resolved last week that industry was facing serious crisis and could not commence crushing on November 15, as notified by Sindh Government.

Sindh Agriculture Department in its notification No 8(37)SO(EXT)183 of November 8, 2002 had asked sugar mills to begin sugarcane crushing season 2002-2003 from Nov 15, 2002.—APP
