KARACHI, Nov 20: The Governor of Sindh, Mohammedmian Soomro, has directed the Home ministry to improve the law and order situation in the province in order to check the growing incidents of vehicle theft and carjackings.
Presiding over the last meeting of his cabinet here on Wednesday, he further directed the Home secretary and the officials of the ministry to install surveillance cameras as specific points, set up check points and ensure presence of duty staff at all the police stations in riverine areas.
Taking notice of the unabetted vehicle theft and snatching of cars and motorcycles at gunpoint, the governor asked the Home Secretary, Brig (r) Mukhtar Ahmed and the IGP, Syed Kamal Shah, to inquire into the absence of policemen from duty at the specified stations and to depute the required force there.
Earlier the two senior officials briefed the governor about the overall law and order situation in Sindh. The governor asked for improving it further.
He called for the setting up of ‘Madadgar 15’ centres in the entire province.
During the meeting, the cabinet members also reviewed the rehabilitation projects of the irrigation system. The Additional Chief Secretary, Ghulam Sarwar Kherro, apprised the meeting of the pace of work on the ongoing projects. The governor directed the ministry to expedite the work.
While discussing the teachers’ training programme, the cabinet decided to impart training to the master trainers through international trainers. To chalk out details of the plan, a committee, comprising the ACS P&D, ACS Finance and Secretary Education, was also constituted by the cabinet.
Regarding working of different departments, Mr Soomro stressed the need for making the system of monitoring the annual performance of government functionaries more effective. He said that the proceedings of any disciplinary action should be made transparent and finalized in shortest possible time. The chief secretary informed the meeting that there has been a special criterion adopted by the Services and General Administration Department for the purpose. He said that the cases of disciplinary actions would be reviewed every month in the meetings.
The governor insisted on ensuring a more transparent and result-oriented criterion for the finalization of the cases pending investigations with the Anti-corruption Establishment. He proposed that the case be disposed of as per their importance and the pending period.
