Chowdhry flays POA, supports sports policy

ISLAMABAD, Nov 11: Pakistan Amateur Boxing Federation (PABF) chief Prof Anwar Chowdhry has supported the national sports policy saying it would help introduce new faces in the Pakistan Olympic Association (POA).

“The present office-bearers of the POA have failed to fulfil their responsibilities and I welcome the national sports policy as a way of infusing fresh blood in the POA hierarchy. The responsibility lies with POA for the decline of Pakistani sports,” he said.

“The respective Olympic associations all over the world are solely responsible for the uplift, selection and training of Olympic athletes. But in Pakistan, our POA acts just as a post office,” the boxing supremo said.

“I think in eight to ten years, a sports official can introduce himself at international level. But the present POA officials have failed to deliver after remaining at helm for many, many years.

“Therefore, the national sports policy will serve a good purpose in weeding out the incompetent sports officials who have been holding their posts since long but Olympic sports, with the possible exception of boxing, have deteriorated during their tenures”, he said.

The new national sports policy bars office-bearers of a federation, including those of POA, from holding their offices for more than two terms of four years at the same post.—APP
