MIRPURKHAS, Oct 31: Wheat sowing in the district is being delayed due to long duration of the water rotation programme.

The production of wheat in Mirpurkhas district, which lies at the tail of the Nara Canal system, might be affected as at the time of its sowing, irrigation department has increased duration of the water rotation programme from one week to two weeks.

Sowing of wheat has already begun in the area and its growers were expecting that one-week rotation programme will continue at least during the wheat sowing season.

However, the Irrigation officials say that water supply to Nara Canal has been reduced as a result they have been compelled to increase the duration of water rotation programme.

The growers have expressed their concern over the two-week- long rotation programme and complained that direct outlets from the canals are exempted from the rotation programme because the irrigation officials are receiving bribe from the beneficiaries of the direct outlets.

The farmers have demanded of the Sindh governor to implement the rotation programme at the direct outlet of the canals also.

AID: Drought-affected people of the desert areas of Mirpurkhas, Sanghar and Tharparkar districts will get 50kg wheat per family.

This was said by Relief Commissioner, Sindh, Manzoor Hussain Bhutto, during his visits to some drought-affected areas.

He also held meetings with the concerned officers here.

He said that the affected people of Achro Thar in Khipro taluka would also get wheat shortly.

He said that wheat would be distributed in the presence of the Nazims in a transparent way.
