KARACHI, Oct 29: An activist of a banned sectarian organisation was shot dead by unknown assailants in Clifton on Tuesday.
Police said that Mohammad Irfan, aged 35, was sitting at a plumbing shop situated in Chapal Beach Arcade, Clifton Block-4, when two unknown persons riding a motorcycle came to the shop, sprayed him with bullets and escaped. Police, quoting some eyewitnesses, said the two assailants were wearing trousers and shirts.
Police said the victim lived in Shah Faisal Colony and the telephone index recovered from his pocket contained the telephone numbers of several Sipah-i-Sahaba leaders.
His body was shifted to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre where the hospital sources said that the victim had received three bullets, one in the neck and two in the back.
A day earlier, on Monday, prayer leader Hafiz Ataul Mohsin Raza, was shot dead by unknown assailants in Bahadurabad in broad daylight near the Alamgir Welfare Trust office Bahadurabad.
SUICIDE: A youth committed suicide in Gulistan-i-Jauhar late on Monday night.
Police said that Mohammad Zeeshan, an engineering student aged 19, went to the washroom and set himself on fire after sprinkling kerosine oil on himself, in his house in block-8, Gulistan-i-Jauhar.
He was taken to the hospital by his brother where he was diagnosed 90 per cent burnt by the doctors.
He was admitted to the Civil Hospital Karachi where he succumbed to his wounds late on Monday night. Police said that at the time of the incident the victim’s sister and brother were present in the house. Till the filing of this report, police could not ascertain the cause of the suicide.
INJURED: An official of the Pakistan Coast Guards was injured while resisting a carjacking attempt in Defence late on Monday night.
Police said that gunman Intizar Ahmed, aged 35, was going in official vehicle (GP-0164) Toyota Hiace, along with driver Nasarullah, in DHA Phase I, when two armed men tried to snatch the vehicle.
When Intizar tried to put up resistance, the armed men snatched his official gun, opened fire and escaped.
The injured gunman was admitted to the PN Shifa.
CARJACKINGS: At least 14 vehicles— seven cars and seven motorcycles— were either hijacked or stolen on Tuesday.
Three cars were hijacked and four cars were stolen and four motorcycles were taken away at gunpoint and three were stolen from different parts of the city.
