Saeed-ul-Haq outclasses Umair

LAHORE, Oct 28: Six matches were decided on the first day of the Global Telecom Cup National Grass Court tennis championship-2002 men’s  singles event at the Punjab Tennis Association courts in Bagh-i-Jinnah Monday.

In the only keenly contested match, Saeed-ul-Haq of Rawalpindi fought hard to beat Umair Qayyum also from Rawalpindi 7-6 (7/5), 7-5. 

Though Saeed won the match in straight sets, Qayyum gave him a tough time in both sets as he stretched the first  set to tie-breaker. Saeed made good use of his forehand while Qayyum earned many points with double fisted backhand smashes.

In  other matches, Irfanullah made short  work  of Ghulam Hussain 6-2, 6-0.

The promising and talented Shahzad  Khan  showed no  mercy  for  Ayyaz  Farooq winning  the  second match of the day  6-0, 6-0. Asif Feroze proved too good for Manzoor Khan whom he beat 6-0, 6-1.

Jalil Khan entered the next round after earning a facile win against Naseeb Younis 6-2, 6-1. Waheed Anwar conceded the match to Wasif Cheema as he retired hurt in the second set when trailing at 3-0. Cheema had won the first set 6-2.

More men’s singles matches will be held on Tuesday. The Boys singles U-18 and U-14 will also begin from Tuesday.
