HYDERABAD, Oct 28: Dr Andress Rieck, a German scholar and resident director, Hanns Seidel Foundation, Islamabad, has expressed the hope some agreement will be reached over the future political setup in Afghanistan.

He was speaking at the opening session of a three-day workshop on “Political Scenario in Afghanistan” at the University of Sindh, Jamshoro, on Monday.

Dr Rieck said the Afghan army should be posted at border crossings.

Vice-Chancellor Mazharul Haq Siddiqui, who presided over the first session, said the people of Afghanistan had always cherished their freedom and had centuries-old traditions.

He expressed the hope the international community would help restore peace in the war-ravaged country.

Dr Ross Masood, former director of the Institute of Strategic Studies, Islamabad, spoke on new patterns of diplomacy in the twenty-first century.

He was of the opinion fundamental tenets and purposes of diplomacy had remained the same but he said changes had occurred mainly in methods and techniques.

The workshop was organized by the department of international relations of the university in collaboration with the Hanns Seidel Foundation.

CASH AWARDS: The first position holder in the test for admissions in bachelors degree courses of the University of Sindh, Jamshoro, will be given Rs10,000, the second Rs7,000, the third Rs5,000, the fourth Rs3,000, and the fifth position holder will be given Rs2,000.

This was announced by the director, admissions, of the university.

ADMISSIONS: The director, admissions, University of Sindh, Jamshoro, has announced the date for admission in bachelors and masters degree courses has been fixed at Nov 9.

LUMHS: The Sindh chief secretary, K. B. Rind, will inaugurate the newly-established diagnostic and research laboratory at the Liaquat University Hospital, Hyderabad city branch.

This was announced by the registrar of the Liaquat University of Medical and Health Sciences (LUMHS), Jamshoro.

The project was funded by the Ministry of Science and Technology.
