LAHORE, Oct 25: Justice Tassaduq Hussain Jillani of the Lahore High Court (LHC) on Friday issued contempt notices to the superintendents of all the 30 jails in Punjab who had failed to release the convicts unable to pay the fines imposed in Diyat and Arsh cases.
Petitioner’s counsel M. D. Tahir submitted that the high court had ordered the release of convicts who had completed their jail terms but were unable to pay the fines imposed in Diyat and Arsh cases in August this year. The court had ordered the release of these prisoners within two weeks, but the jail superintendents released none.
Deputy Advocate General Danashwar Malik submitted that the provincial and federal governments had filed appeals in the Supreme Court against the high court decision.
The petitioner pointed out that the high court decision was still in force, as the appeals had not been admitted yet.
POL PRICES: The hearing of a petition against the hike in prices of POL products was adjourned until Sept 7, after the counsel submitted a list of pricing experts.
