ISLAMABAD, Oct 25: The interior ministry on Friday categorically stated that the government had no intention to hand over Dr Amir Aziz to the United States.
Referring to a news item published in a section of the Press, a spokesman for the ministry told APP that Dr Amir was being interrogated by Pakistani agencies and not by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).
He termed the report wrong and baseless and also refuted that Dr Amir Aziz was under arrest.
The spokesman said the name of the doctor had come up during interrogation of certain accused persons held in Guantanamo Bay. Therefore, it had become necessary to investigate the matter thoroughly, he added.
Replying to a question, he said Dr Amir was in good health and in constant contact with his wife and other family members.
It was quite probable, he said, that Dr Amir could return to his house within the next few days, once the undergoing investigations against him were over, unless his involvement in any unlawful act was proved.
Clarifying the report that the doctor had been arrested, the spokesman said that once Dr Amir had been told that he was required in an investigation, he had offered himself for it.
