VEHARI, Oct 21: The Tareen family of Mailsi has reportedly contacted the DSP concerned for a reconciliation with the family of a woman who was disgraced on the orders of Jahangir Tareen last Thursday.

Tareen family’s head in Mailsi, Nazar Khan Khakwani, met DSP Habib Ghumman at his residence here on Monday to discuss the ‘proper’ way to withdraw the case against Jahangir.

A source said police sought three days to ‘resolve’ the issue.

He claimed that Nazar Khakwani ‘offered’ a big amount to the police as bribe to resolve the issue.

Ironically, police did not arrest any of the accused or the Tareen family members. It, however, arrested some members of the victim’s family apparently to force them to reconcile with the ‘influential’ family.

Mailsi Sadar police have reportedly approached the elders of the victim’s family and offered them a handsome amount to withdraw the case against the landlord.

When this scribe tried to contact DSP Ghumman, police official on duty said he was on a couple of days’ leave. The Sadar police station SHO, when asked about the development in the case, said he knew nothing about the case.

Meanwhile, the Punjab governor has directed the Mailsi police to complete the investigation of the incident and send a report to him.

A punchayat headed by landlord Jahangir Tareen ordered on Thursday last shaving off the head and eyebrows of Sarwar Mai, blackening her face and parading her in the village streets on the allegation of loose morals levelled against her by her husband. Sarwar’s clothes tore apart when she resisted implementation of her sentence by force and she was paraded in the streets half-naked.
