HYDERABAD, Oct 10: At least eight people were killed and dozens injured when contesting parties clashed in various Sindh, Punjab and Balochistan constituencies during Thursday elections.
Of them, five were killed in Sindh, one in Balochistan and two in Punjab.
SINDH:In Khipro, Sanghar district, Ahmad son of Amin Gujjo was shot dead and 20 others injured when a clash took place between supporters of PML-F and PPP. The deceased was reportedly an activist of PPP.
In Shahdadpur taluka of Sanghar district, half a dozen persons were injured at village Tayyab Thaheem during the polling. Incidents of firing were also reported at some other polling stations of the district.
In Naushero Feroze, two persons were killed and several others injured in clashes. In the clash at polling station No-250, village Naggar Chandio near Mithiani, NPP activist, Sikandar Ali Chandio was killed and nine others were injured in a clash with opponent party.
In another incident Soomar son of Gulab Khokhar of PPP was killed and several others from PPP and NPP were injured. The PPP activists injured in the incident, were taken to Nawabshah hospital whereas the NPP activists were taken to Tharushah hospital.
Reports from Digri said two PML-N supporters were seriously injured in an armed clash with PPP workers at Government High School Digri polling station. Both the injured Dr Shahid Farooq Arain and Shahid Muhammad who had sustained bullet injuries were rushed to Liaquat University Hospital Hyderabad in serious condition. Later, Arain died of wounds.
Reports further said that a Muttahida Qaumi Movement activist Saindad Soomro was axed to death allegedly by the activists of rival party in Pithoro, Tharparkar district.
Firing was also exchanged at polling station No-77 Government Primary School, Digri in which five PML-F workers received injuries.
In Hyderabad, a clash between Muttahida Qaumi Movement and Mohajir Qaumi Movement took place on Bhai Khan Chari after the close of polling in which a pedest-rian and Mohajir Qaumi Movement activist received bullet injuries.
Another clash took place at civil hospital in which another Mohajir Qaumi Movement activist also received bullet injuries. The situation in Hyderabad is very tense and further clashes between the two parties could not be ruled out.
Clashes also reportedly took place in Tando Mohammad Khan taluka between PPP and SDA activists as a result of which 27 persons from both side were injured, none of them critical.
In Dadu 40 persons received bullet injuries in election-related violence at different polling stations. The polling stations included village Solmiani where polling remain suspended from 2pm to 4pm.
Although no casualty has been reported from other districts yet incidents of violence have been reported from Sukkur, Ghotki, Shikarpur, Jacobabad and other districts of interior Sindh.
KARACHI: Several people were injured in the post-election violence in separate incidents in different parts of Karachi on Thursday.
Four workers of the Sunni Tehreek were injured when workers of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement opened fire at a polling station in Korangi Y Area, the Zaman Town police said.
The said the workers were present outside the Red Rose School, where a polling station was set up.
The three injured were identified as Afzal Qadri, Mohammad Husain and Sarfaraz. They were taken to the Jinnah hospital.
Tension griped the area following the firing. However, more contingents of law enforcement agencies moved into the area to prevent the situation from deteriorating.
A worker of Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal was injured during a clash with the workers of Muttahida Qaumi Movement in Kalaboard Saudabad.
Police said during the clash worker of MMA Nadeem Akthar, aged 30, was hit by a stone in the head.
He was shifted to a nearby private hospital for treatment, police added.
A pedestrian Mohammad Aslam, aged 28, was injured New Karachi, when he was hit by a stray bullet, he was shifted to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital for treatment.
Another person identified as Habib Khan was injured in Orangi Extension when he was hit by a stray bullet, he was rushed to a nearby private hospital.
In Malir Khokhrapar, Sunni Tehreek leader Iftikhar Bhatti claimed that he was attacked by armed men, following the attack tension griped the area.
In Malir B Area, Maulana Mohammad Ali, Raju injured during a clash between the MMA and Muttahida Qaumi Movement.
The injured were shifted to a private hospital for treatment, police added.
PUNJAB: Two people were killed more than 50 injured in poll violence throughout the province on Thursday.
Mian Raza Rabbani was shot dead allegedly by a union council Nazim in Multan on old Shujabad Road that falls under NA-148. Both were the supporters of Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) candidate Shah Mahmood Qureshi.
In the evening, three men of the Rana Shamshad group shot dead Rana Ali Sher and injured Mushtaq Bhutta near Chungi Bahawalpur, some 1.5km away from Dera Muhammadi, near Multan.
In Sialkot, Variyo family’s Tariq Subhani, the younger brother of Pakistan Mulsim League (PML-QA) candidate for PP-125 Khush Akhtar Subhani, was injured in firing allegedly by PPP aspirant Tahir Mahmood Hundali and his supporters.
In Gujrat, 15 workers of different political parties were injured in clashes.
In Sahiwal, nine workers of two political parties were injured, one of them seriously, in an altercation at the Government Middle School polling station in Chak 20/14-D.
In Faisalabad, two people were injured in clashed between supporters of candidates in Chak Jhumra and Chak 233-RB, Saddar.
In Vehari, Half a dozen people were injured in various parts of the district.
In Kasur, a union council Nazim and a councillor beat up a presiding officer in Jambar Khurd village when he refu-sed to accept certain rejected votes.
In Sheikhupura, a presiding officer was kidnapped allegedly by workers of a PML-QA candidate.
BALOCHISTAN:One person was killed and seven others injured in election violence in different areas of Balochistan, on Thursday.
The workers of PML-Q and Pushtoonkhawa Milli Awami party clashed and opened fire on each other resulting in killing of a worker of PML-Q and injuring three others. Official sources said the armed clash took place after polling on a petty dispute. The PML-Q worker who killed in the clash was identified as Abdul Munaf.
In Panjgur, four persons were injured two of them seriously in an armed clash between two groups of Balochistan National Movement (BNM) and Balochistan National Party (BNP-Mengal).
After the armed clash heavy contingent of levies and Makran scouts were deployed in the area to avert further clashes.
In Chaman, a number of firing incidents took place in different areas of the Killa Abdullaha and Chaman during polling resulting in the injuries to two persons. The clashes took place between the workers of Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam (JUI) and PMAP. Polling was suspended on various polling stations in different area due to firing and stone pelting on each other.
However, later polling was restored which continued till 5 pm.
The poling was also suspended for half and hour in a woman polling station in Pushtoonabad area of Quetta city.
The workers and supporters of JUI said some women used fake identity cards which caused uproar.
