BENONI (South Africa), Oct 6: Herschelle Gibbs failed by three runs to score a world record fourth consecutive century as South Africa thrashed Bangladesh by 10 wickets in the second One-day International Sunday.
Gibbs was stranded on 97 not out scored off 66 balls with 19 fours as South Africa replied to Bangladesh’s 154 for nine with 155 without loss in 20.2 overs to clinch the three-match series.
South Africa were 149 without loss with Gibbs facing on 96 at the start of the last over of the match when leg-spinner Alok Kapali sent a delivery wide down the legside.
The ball passed Gibbs untouched and beat wicket-keeper Khaled Mashud before crossing the boundary to add five wides to the total and tie the scores. Gibbs drove the next delivery down the ground for a single to end the match.
Gibbs made 116 against Kenya and 116 retired against India in the Champions Trophy in Sri Lanka. He then scored a career best 153 in the first match of the series in Potcheftroom on Thursday, which South Africa won by 168 runs.
Pakistanis Zaheer Abbas and Saeed Anwar are the only other players to achieve a hat trick of one-day hundreds.
Makhaya Ntini took three for 28 on a lively pitch as South Africa restricted Bangladesh to their modest total. Manjural Islam blighted the paceman’s figures by taking 12 runs off Ntini’s 10th and last over.
Bangladesh rallied towards the end of their innings, with Tapash Baisya and Manjural adding 37 off 41 balls for the ninth wicket, the biggest stand of the innings.
