ISLAMABAD, Oct 4: The World Teachers’ Day is being observed on Saturday in Islamabad and Rawalpindi like in other parts of the world.

Various programmes have been chalked out for the occasion. A teachers’ convention will be held at a local hotel. On this occasion, Unesco, Unicef, ILO and UNDP issued a joint statement in which they stated the importance of teachers in building peace and tolerance and eliminate discrimination. Concern is raised about the importance of improving educational level.

“Many countries fail to employ adequate number of teachers. As leaders of the UN bodies most directly concerned with teachers, we encourage governments as well as society at large to reflect seriously on this dilemma and take appropriate actions.”

The Unesco Office in Islamabad has released a booklet which gives information on international and national norms and standards of the teaching profession.—APP
