OKARA, Sept 18: A woman committed suicide by jumping into a canal while a recently married man took a gulp of some pesticide to end his life in separate incidents in the district.

The woman, Parveen, was carrying her two children when she jumped into the Lower Bari Doab Canal, who, however, were saved by a gypsy youth.

Ms Parveen had a strained relationship with her husband Mohammad Abbas and in-laws at 51/3R. The body was recovered from the canal after hectic efforts.

Ghulam Abbas lived in Main Bazaar, Basirpur. His wife, whom he had married just six months ago, was estranged from him and had been living at her parents’ for the last three months. He recently brought his wife home, only to face the wrath of his parents. He took a pesticide to end his life. He was shifted to hospital where he died. —Correspondent
