KARACHI, Sept 18: Several localities of Jamshed Town have been flooded with sewage water due to the bursting of an obsolete 48” dia pipeline of pumping station No 1 of Treatment Plant No 2 on Tuesday.
The affected areas include Mehmoodabad, Channesar Goth, PECHS Block-6, Karachi Administration Society, Liaquat Ashraf Colony No 1 and 2 and others areas. The Karachi Water and Sewerage Board authorities, in a letter to the Nazim, Jamshed Town, admitted that a vast area has been badly affected. However, repair work is in progress and efforts are being made to divert or drain out the filthy water.
The residents of these localities complained that they were getting contaminated, malodourous water for drinking, as owing to the leaking water supply system, sewage water was getting mixed with it, changing its colour.
Meanwhile, Imran Saeed Baghpati, Nazim UC-5 Mehmoodabad, in a statement, criticized the KWSB authorities for their failure in ensuring proper maintenance of the system, and said they have time and again drew the attention of board officials in writing towards obsolete pipelines, but they had not paid heed.
He said that this time, a 48” dia line had burst, but feared that another sewerage line of 54” dia may burst at any time, as it is also structurally worn out.
Imran pointed out a 12” dia water supply line, which according to him, passes through a sewerage drain to supply water from Mehmoodabad to Liaquat Ashraf Colony, and said with such a faulty system, the citizens have been made to consume water mixed with sewage.—PPI
