KARACHI: Presentation by archeology department

KARACHI, Sept 17: The Provincial Secretary for Culture and Tourism, Ashiq Hussain Memon, has stressed upon the improvement of the system of storage of all public records and their retrieval.

He issued this instruction while presiding over a presentation of the department of archeology at its office situated in Clifton on Tuesday. Director Archives, Sindh, Ahmeduddin Hanjra gave the presentation.

The director archives apprised the provincial secretary culture that researchers and scholars are being provided library services and other facilities.

Presently, some 54,774 documents relating to research, history and culture were present, and were being micro-filmed. The reproduction of some old documents and their publication was also being arranged, he disclosed.

The department of archeology is contemplating digitizing public records with the help of modern technology and also implementing the Sindh Archives Law.

Ashiq Memon instructed the need to speed up the process, and for the preparation of an introductory presentation about modern technology for the provincial minister for finance.

He also directed for the establishment of archeology offices in Hyderabad and Sukkur on a priority basis, and to submit a summary to the Sindh governor seeking permission for necessary staff.

The meeting was also informed about the holding of a seminar in this respect, and inviting intellectuals and universities throughout Sindh to seek their guidance for the betterment of the archeology departm-ent based on their experience.—PPI
