ISLAMABAD, Sept 16: The SAF Games Organising Committee (SGOC) Monday decided to hold an international seminar to discuss ways to improve the standard of sports in the country.

Following a high-level meeting presided over by the chairman of the SGOC, Lt Gen Syed Arif Hasan, it was announced that the seminar would be organised in December.

A spokesman for the SGOC told Dawn that the seminar, likely to run for three days, will be attended by officials of the International Olympic Committee and the international federations besides journalists and other relevant people.

The seminar will focus on sports journalism, sports medicine and ways to streamline sports, the spokesman said.

The meeting also discussed its revenue generation projects including the Hero card scheme and expressed satisfaction over its progress. “We are meeting the targets we had set for ourselves,” the spokesman said.

The SGOC meanwhile plans to seek sponsors for various sports to supplement the coffers of the national federations.

The SGOC has actively supported sports like boxing, wrestling, weightlifting, volleyball, swimming and karate and sent their teams for training abroad before the SAF Games were postponed. The regional event will now be held next March in Islamabad.

The meeting was also attended by the POA chief, Syed Wajid Ali Shah, officials of the PSB and various ministries.
