LAHORE, Sept 14: A card featuring five cup races highlights the second Lahore Winter Meeting to be held at the Racecourse Sunday.
Four cups bearing the names of national war heroes, the recipients of the highest gallantry award, Nishan-i-Haider while the fifth is named Muhammad Tughlaq Cup, a class IV & V combined handicap race.
The main event, Muhammad Tughlaq Cup to be run over the middle distance of seven furlongs has a dozen acceptors, if there are no last-minute withdrawals. The contestants are from among the top thoroughbreds racing in lahore.
If one follows entries on handicap, past performance and track work four of them come into reckoning. They are: bay horse Admiral’s Way, dark-bay colt King Fisher, bay colt Desert Dream and chestnut filly Devi Husn Ki. On Handicap Desert Dream has an edge over the others. This will be the sixth and last race in racing order.
The fifth and supporting event, Capt. Muhammad Sarwar Shaheed Cup has thirteen runners barring last-minute withdrawals. This looks a match between two colts, The Conqueror and Lucky Shot. Both are in top form but since the distance of race is seven furlongs, it goes in favour of The Conqueror.
Chestnut filly Value Of Life seems a cut above in class vis-a-vis her thirteen rivals in the Lance Naik Mahfooz Shaheed Cup to be run over the sprinting distance of 1000 metres.
Bay colt Prince Khurrum and dark bay gelding Decent Fellow are outstanding entries in the Havildar Lalak Jan Shaheed Cup and the Sawar Muhammad Hussain Shaheed Cup, respectively.
In the opener Weldon Shogun is being fancied on track work. This bay colt from Shogun out-of-Hurmat caused an uproar on Wednesday last when he was installed favourite. Shortly before the start of the race it transpired that he was not on job. Some owners met the LRC stewards and requested for a change of rider, which they refused saying they cannot change the rider of favourite. The race was later cancelled.
The first race will be held at 2.30 pm.
