Speaking at a news conference at Karachi Press Club on Saturday, KUTS Vice-President Riaz Ahmed demanded removal of the Vice-Chancellor and Registrar of Karachi University and shifting of the unit of the rangers.
He said the members of the KUTS had gathered at the administration block to press for the acceptance of their demands but they were beaten up by the university’s security staff.
Riaz claimed that eight faculty members and three dozen students were injured.
He said the KUTS and the students had nothing to do with the ransacking of the administration block and the offices of the VC.
Riaz announced that after taking classes on Monday, the teachers would again gather at the administration block and ask as to what action had been initiated against those responsible for Saturday’s incident on the campus.
He said after Saturday’s incident, several hundred teachers and students had gathered at the main entrance of the University and also blocked the road for five minutes before dispersing peacefully.
Riaz also demanded that the University be run in accordance with the rules and regulations.
He protested at the compulsory retirement of Prof. Dr. Pervez Siddiqui and called for his reinstatement. Riaz also demanded the withdrawal of the recommendations of the task force on higher education.
KUTS general secretary Sarwar Nasim who had also sustained injuries on Saturday at the campus, was also present at the press conference with a bandaged hand.
A number of faculty members and the students were also present on the occasion.
Representatives of students also pledged to continue their protest campaign and boycott of classes till the termination of VC.
The students also demanded that all those responsible for humiliating teachers, students and female faculty members be arrested and brought to justice.
The students belonging to various student groups condemned the inhuman acts of violence.
They urged the federal minister, Dr Atta-ur-Rehman, and advisor to President, Dr. Abdul Qadeer Khan, to withdraw their support to present administration of the KU.
On this occasion, a large number of teachers announced tendering of their resignations from administrative posts of the varsity, saying they could not continue their jobs with “such a cruel administration”.
Meanwhile, the Sindh Professors and Lecturers Association has announced that it would observe a black-day in the colleges and would not take part in academic activities on Monday. —APP/PPI
