KARACHI, Sept 4: The anti-narcotics court, headed by Judge Ali Nawaz Pirzada, sentenced on Wednesday a Nigerian to an eight-year term for attempting to smuggle 1.9 kilograms heroin.

The judge also imposed a fine of Rs100,000 on Christopher Anyo Umer, who was arrested on Nov 9, last year by the Customs at the Quaid-i-Azam International Airport.

The drug smuggler would have to undergo an additional six- month term in case of default on the payment.

Meanwhile, the same court acquitted two men, prosecuted for possessing five kilograms hashish as the prosecution could not prove its case.

Jahanzeb and Vakil Khan were arrested on April 17, 1998 by the police on the drug charges.

The two accused were represented by Ms Shazia.

The judge also exonerated an absconding accused from all charges in absentia. Gohar, who had obtained pre-arrest bail and later skipped the proceedings, was earlier declared an absconder in the case.
