Australia crush hapless Kenya

NAIROBI, Sept 2: World champions Australia were again at their devastating best in the triangular one-day tournament Monday bowling Kenya out for their lowest-ever total of 84 at the Gymkhana Ground.

The visitors then required just 17 overs to wrap the match, coasting home by eight wickets.

Put into bat, Kenya were all out in 35.3 overs with Brijal Patel the only batsman scoring respectable runs for his side.

The 24-year-old made 28 runs off 65 balls before he was stumped by wicket-keeper Adam Gilchrist off the bowling of Shane Warne.

Kenya’s previous lowest was 90 against India last year in the tri-nation tournament in South Africa.

At one stage Kenya were 17 for six with Australian opening bowlers Jason Gillespie and Glenn McGrath ripped through Kenya’s top and middle order.

Captain Steve Tikolo (4), Thomas Odoyo (0) and Maurice Odumbe (0) were dismissed in the 12th, 13th and 14th overs as Kenya’s batting, which badly missed injured pair of Ravindu Shah and Hitesh Modi, succumbed to Australia’s pace attack.

McGrath bowled one of his most economical spells taking three wickets for just eight runs.

Gillespie, however, was unable to apply the devastating form he displayed against Pakistan on Friday.

The 32-year-old was hit for 40 runs for three wickets.

Australia got off to a confident start and reached 38 before the opening partnership was ended, pace bowler Martin Suji taking the wicket of Adam Gilchrist lbw for 22 in the seventh over.
