ISLAMABAD, Sept 1: Water level at the three dams of the twin cities has increased to a satisfactory mark, sources in different civic bodies told Dawn.

They said the recent spell of rains had increased the water level at Simly Dam, Khanpur Dam and Rawal Dam.

Sources in the Capital Development Authority said the water level at Simly Dam, as recorded on Saturday, was 2,277 feet which showed an increase of five feet from its last reading of 2,273 feet. The highest level is stated to be 2,295 feet.

They said the level at the dam was increasing day by day and there would be no water shortage in the capital next summer.

Some 20 million gallons per day (MGD) is being supplied from Simly Dam and the supply would be enhanced as the level increases.

Earlier, they said it was decided that water rationing would be raised in the twin cities after August 31. Now it is being considered that rationing should be stopped because of recent improvement in water reserves.

Sources said Rawal Dam was almost full due to the recent rains, and there would be no water scarcity in the city till next June.

“In case of more rains in the catchment area of Rawal Dam, the spillways of the dam would have to be opened to release extra water,” the sources said.

Talking about water level of Khanpur Dam, the sources said it had increased by four feet and further rains would improve the situation. They said the water level at the dam had reached 1,935 feet against its highest level of 1,982. The dead level of the dam is stated to be 1,910 feet.

They said supply from the dam had improved from 3MGD to eight for Islamabad. However, the supply was still less than the quota of 17MGD.
