ABBOTTABAD, Aug 24: Unseeded Attique caused a major upset in the 5th All Pakistan Mushtaq Rehmani Memorial badminton tournament when he defeated Waqas in the quarterfinals being played at City Sports Ccomplex while second seeded Zeshan did not turn up for his quarterfinals match, giving walkover to Shabbar.
Ashraf Masih retired in second game against national champion Wajid Ali while Ahsan Qamar defeated Imran Mohib to complete the semifinals lineup.
Clash between seasoned Waqas and young and young Attiqe was a real thriller. Attique raced to 10-0 but Waqas fought back to reduce the leeway to 10-10.
However he faltered at crucial points to allow Attique wrap up game 15-12.
Waqas tried to get back his rhythm in the second but could not match the brilliance of the youngster who romped home 15-9 to for an unexpected but deserved victory.
Ashraf Masih who in team event contest succeeded to win one game from Wajid could not produce his best and after losing first game 15-7 he left the court on medical grounds with in the second game with the score 12-6.
Ahsan Qamar defeated his Imran Mohib by 15-8 and 15-9.
In the doubles quarterfinals, Attique and Shabbar defeated Haroon Kaleem and Arshad 11-15,15-10,15-12.
Imran Mohib and Noman Sikandar beat Afridi and Adnan (NWFP) 15-6, 15-7. Zeshan and Rizwan defeated Aftab Rehmani and Nadeem 15-11, 15-12. Wajid and Waqas beat Intikhab and Naeem 15-4,15-5.
