KATHMANDU, Oct 8: Around 50 women were arrested on Monday after taking part in a demonstration in Nepal demanding equal rights to paternal property, police sources said.

Under Nepali law property inherited by a woman has to be given to a close paternal relative if the woman gets married.

Around 2,000 women joined the protest in Kathmandu, shouting slogans such as “Daughters have to be given their right to paternal property”.

Witnesses said police arrested around 50 of the women for blocking traffic and protesting near the parliament.

All the women were released a short time later.—AFP
