PESHAWAR, Aug 20: NWFP Governor Syed Iftikhar Hussain Shah has directed the relief agencies to survey the areas affected by recent rains and floods and estimate the extent of losses caused by them.

The governor visited the areas near Peshawar, where recent rains and the floods left hundreds of houses collapsed and crops damaged.

The flash flood also caused damage to two bridges, besides causing damage to main roads in different localities.

The governor was accompanied by senior member of the Board of Revenue, Syed Mazhar Ali Shah, Director-general Health Habibur Rehman, District Nazim Azam Afridi, Naib Nazim Iqbal Khalil, town Nazim Mumtaz Khan and senior officials.

The governor directed the DG health to send medical teams to the affected areas to carry out vaccination drive.

He visited Shahi Payan, where the flood completely washed away a bridge, creating traffic problems in the area. He also visited many severely affected villages, including Spar Sung, Khadai Noorgarh, Akhunzadgan, Shahgai and Mustajab Garhi, and met the affected people.

Speaking to the people of the Mustajab Garhi village, the governor said the government was fully aware of the miseries and difficulties of the villagers. He asked the Nazimeen and the councillors to not only supervise relief activities but also verify the losses to ensure release of assistance to the affected people.  

The governor assured the people that the government would try its best to ensure provision of maximum relief assistance to the affected people.

Meanwhile, it was told on this occasion that on the directive of the governor not only relief committees have started relief activities, the government has also released an amount of Rs1 million to enable the affected people to meet their immediate needs.

The government has also arranged tents for the displaced people.
