KARACHI, Aug 20: Protesters from the Lyari area on Tuesday evening staged a rally in front of the Karachi Press Club against the “killing of an alleged suspect in Kalakot police custody on Saturday.”
The protesters, mainly youths, alleged that Murad Ali, who was a resident of Kalakot, had died as a result of police torture while he was in custody.
Spokesman of the protesters, Abdul Sattar Qadri, repudiated the police claim that the “suspect Murad Ali was injured in an encounter with the police in Kalakot area and later died in the custody.”
Maintaining that the deceased had nothing to do with any criminal activity, he urged the higher authorities to conduct an inquiry into the causes of the death of an innocent citizen.
He also condemned the harassment by the police in the locality on the pretext of a search operation against criminals. The protesters who remained peaceful raised anti-police slogans.
