LAHORE, Aug 11: Eighth seed Komail Hassan upset second seed Gulzeb Niazi 6-3 6-3 to reach semifinals of the All-Punjab Independence Day Under-18 junior tennis tournament at Bagh-i-Jinnah Sunday.

Top seed Munir Ashiq did not face resistance from Mustafa Sherdil to score a 6-2 6-2 victory over his unseeded rival to qualify for the last four.

In another quarterfinal, Shahrukh Niazi defeated Salman Bashir 6-1 1-6 6-2.

In boys Under-12 singles, top seed Omer Babar and third seed Shehryar Niazi qualified for the final.

Omar toppled Ahmad Aslam 6-4, 6-2, while Shehryar stunned second seed Khurram Nazir 0-6, 7-5, 7-6 (8/6).

In a Under-14 quarterfinal, fifth seed Fahad Ali ousted top seed Shehryar Niazi 7-5, 3-6, 6-3. Omar beat Khurram 6-1, 4-6, 6-0, third seed Tanveer Ashiq outplayed unseeded Ahmad Aslam 6-2, 4-6, 6-2, Patras Masih scored a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Tanzim Shafqat.

In Under-18 girls semifinal, Nida Rahim routed Shehla Nazir 6-0, 6-0, while Zainab Kaleem reached Under-14 final after a 6-0 6-0 win over Zarnab Amin.
