KARACHI, Aug 8: Two men committed suicide in the city on Thursday.
A young man committed suicide in his house in Garden West. Police said that Mohammed Iqbal, aged 20, hanged himself in his house in Shoe Market area, Garden West.
The body was sent to Civil Hospital for post-mortem.
Police could not immediately ascertain the motive for the suicide.
A 55-year-old man hanged himself in his house in Nazimabad. Police said that Iqbal Husain, aged 55, hanged himself from the ceiling fan after locking himself up in his room in his house in Nazimabad No 3.
The body was sent to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital for post-mortem.
ENCOUNTERS: A policeman was shot dead in an encounter with bandits in Model Colony on early Thursday morning.
Five armed men entered house No 5/63 around 5am, where Syed Haider Ali was staying as tenant. Police said that the bandits started collecting valuables in the house after holding family members at gunpoint.
One of the family members managed to inform police on “15.” A police party arrived there. As the policemen were taking positions outside the house, the bandits opened fire at police.
Police said that one of the bandits, identified as Noor Mohammed, while escaping from the house, opened fire at police hitting a policeman, Athar Husain, aged 32. The policeman died on the spot. He suffered two bullet wounds: one to the chest and the other to a leg.
Police entered the house and arrested four bandits, identified as Kamran, Abdul Ghafoor, Farooq, and Fahim. Police claimed to have recovered four pistols, jewellery worth Rs500,000 and Rs75,000 from their possession.
Police registered a case.
Police shot two bandits to death and a policeman was injured in an alleged encounter with bandits in Buffer Zone in the evening.
Police said that two armed men tried to enter a bungalow in sector 11-C/1 in Buffer Zone. The occupants of the house raised alarm forcing the bandits to flee away.
Police said that a patrolling police mobile spotted them wandering about in a suspicious manner near a petrol pump. When the two bandits saw police, they tried to escape opening fire at police. A policeman, Mohammed Shoaib, was wounded by their firing.
Police returned the fire seriously wounding both the bandits.
One of the suspects died on the spot. The other was rushed to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital. Police said that the wounded suspect identified himself as Zulfiqar to the medicolegal officer before he died.
The wounded policeman was admitted to the hospital.
Police said that the suspects’ two other accomplices escaped in their Suzuki pick-up before the encounter.
ROAD ACCIDENTS: Reckless driving claimed two lives in the city on Thursday.
A five-year-old girl died in a road accident at Kala Board in Malir in the morning.
Police said that a four-seater autorickshaw was hit by a speeding bus of route 44-A near a hospital in Malir. Five-year-old Nida died on the spot. She was on way to her school when the accident took place.
A young man died in a hit-and-run accident in Defence. Police said that Syed Pervaiz, aged 40, was run over by an unidentified vehicle on Sunset Boulevard.
