QUETTA, Aug 7: Tribute was paid to late educationist, and human rights activist Dr Syed Amiruddin at a reference at Balochistan Arts Council.

Dr Amiruddin, a well-known figure of Balochistan, had died in a car crash on July 14.

The well-attended reference, presided over by scholar Prof Nadir Qambrani, was organized by Aurat Foundation.

The speakers paid tribute to services rendered by Dr Amiruddin as Sui High School principal and project director of Loralai Residential College and Helpers’ college.

As vice-chairperson of Human Rights Commission of Pakistan, Balochistan chapter, Dr Amiruddin raised voice against human rights violation in Balochistan and other parts of the country without any fear and discrimination, they said.

They said Dr Amiruddin was forcibly retired as principal of the Helpers’ College under the pressure of the military government because he challenged the rule of generals in a live Pakistan Television programme.

They said he had refused to compromise with the Balochistan education minister when she interfered in the affairs of Loralai Residential College and resigned from his post as director of the project when the chief minister supported the minister.

He helped provide legal assistance to prisoners to seek their release, they said.

Surriya Amiruddin, wife of Dr Amiruddin, HRCP Balochistan Chapter Vice-Chairman Zahoor Shahwani, Quetta Press Club President Ikram Ahmed and Aurat Foundation Regional Director Yunas Khalid also spoke.
