ISLAMABAD, Aug 7: The Capital Development Authority (CDA) has established a Flood Relief Cell (FRC) at its sanitation directorate to meet any eventuality during the current monsoon season.
In case of an emergency people could contact the FRC at telephone number 134, a senior CDA official informed Dawn on Wednesday.
The authority have asked people, who have basements or live in low-lying areas to take precautionary measures to protect themselves and their property against flood-like situation.
Similarly, the dwellers of kutcha abadis especially those living along nullahs have also been advised to shift to safer areas.
Meanwhile, all concerned departments in Rawalpindi and Islamabad have been put on alert to tackle any untoward situation during the rainy season.
The Edhi Welfare Trust has been asked to provide maximum assistance to the flood affected people. The trust will provide food and clothes to the people.
Likewise live stock department has set up six vaccination centres at various localities to administer vaccine to the animals.
The CDA has taken steps to assist people of low-lying areas who were hit by the inundation of Nullah Leh, last year.
About 18km long Nullah Leh starts from I-9 Islamabad and falls into Soan River, after touching many residential localities of the twin cities. Flood in Leh has become a yearly feature causing sufferings and loss to the people of the two cities.
The official said the Islamabad Capital Territory (ICT) administration has prepared a contingency plan to help the people living in the catchment areas of Simly Dam, Rawal Dam, Soan River and Nullah Leh. Both the CDA and the ICT will coordinate with each other to meet any emergency.
On the request of the district administration, III Brigade of the army has provided 50 army personnel for its assistance. They will be deployed at sensitive areas along with the officials of the district administration. Pakistan Navy has provided its divers and three boats to the administration to shift people of flood hit areas to safe places.
Three flood relief camps have been established at different areas of Islamabad including sector F-7, Sihala and Khana Dak.
The assistant commissioner city has been made in-charge of the relief camp at sector F-7, city magistrate will look after the affairs of Soan relief camp while secretary Islamabad Transport Authority is in-charge Sihala relief camp.
Sufficient quantity of consumer items like flour, lentils, vegetable ghee, packed milk etc., has been stored in the camps. The amount stored could last three to four days, he said.
A control room has been set up at additional deputy commissioner (general) office to monitor the flood situation and receive people’s complaints. People can lodge their complaints with the control room at (No-9261504).
The volunteers of civil defence department have been activated and special training imparted to them to meet any untoward incident.
He said the district administration was keeping a close contact with the meteorological office to keep itself updated on rain forecast.The water level at Simly and Rawal Dam was monitored on daily basis as a precautionary measure.
A traffic diversion plan has also been prepared by the district administration which would be implemented, if required.
