KARACHI, Aug 6: Residents of some parts of Lyari Town have expressed concern over insanitary conditions caused by choked gutter lines.

Fearing possibility of the spread of epidemic diseases in their areas, they have criticised the concerned civic agencies for their indifferent attitude toward the people.

Sewage has been overflowing in Basra Colony near the Lea Market Telephone Exchange and Yusuf Haroon Street in the Baghdadi area, creating unhygienic conditions in these localities. The residents say the conditions have deteriorated for the past two weeks and no measures have been taken to pump out the stagnant water which has become a breeding source of mosquitoes and flies.

Sewage also continues to overflow on a part of Bombassa street in the Baghdadi area because of a choked gutter line for the past few days.

The residents complain that the stagnant water has created unhygienic conditions in the locality, posing a serious health hazard. The residents of Baghdadi, Kalri, Shah Beg Lane, Nawabad and Daryabad have been facing great hardships because of pools of sewage everywhere.

A resident from Baghdadi said that a civic agency a couple of weeks ago started digging work on Shah Latif Bhittai to lay new pipelines. “It appears that somewhere the sewerage line has joined the water supply line causing mixing of sewage with the water supply. The continuous supply of polluted water is causing gastro-intestinal diseases among the residents of the affected localities,” he said.

Another resident said: “If remedial steps are not taken, epidemic diseases may spread in the locality.” The residents say that although they have lodged numerous complaints with officials concerned, no measures has so far been taken to resolve the problem.
