SUKKUR, Aug 2: A constable was killed and two other people including a sub-inspector were injured when they came in the way of armed dacoits who were attempting to kidnap a businessman on Thursday.

The dacoits were waiting in a car for Haji Mohammed Idris, Vice President of the Jamiat Punjabi Saudagran, who went for Fajr prayers daily to a mosque which was near his house at Station Road. As soon as Mr Idris came out of his house, he was overpowered by the dacoits, quickly shoved into their car and driven away.

Eyewitnesses said that he was crying for help.

In the meantime, a wagon carrying a sub-inspector and a constable happened to pass by. They heard Mr Idris crying out for help.

One of the dacoits, on seeing the police opened fire as a result of which the constable, Bhooral Khan, was killed on the spot while the sub-inspector, Mohammed Maroof Khaskheli, and the wagon driver, Munnawar, were injured.

During the firing, Mr Idris managed to escape from the clutches of the dacoits and hid in a nearby lane.

The dacoits fearing that more police were nearby escaped immediately.

The DPO, Sukkur, Din Mohammed Baloch, soon arrived at the site and ordered that all entry and exit points of the area be sealed but the dacoits had already escaped by then.

WORKSHOP: A two-day workshop for the customer services officers from Sindh, Balochistan, and Punjab was organized by the Khushhali Bank at Sukkur on Thursday.

The aim of the workshop was to further mobilize CSOs, who form the core of the Khushhali Banks, and extend credit operations in the far-flung areas of the country.

The Khushhali Bank within a short span of two years has established at least 1,900 village-based community organizations in 27 districts, which have extended Rs170 million in loans to 11,000 males and 4,500 females in Sindh alone.
