KARACHI, Aug 1: Sindh Chief Secretary K.B. Rind has said that 300 new CNG-run buses will arrive from Japan soon and ply in the city. He stated this in a high-level meeting held in the City District Government Council Hall here on Thursday.

Present at the meeting were City Nazim, Naimatullah Khan, Naib Nazim, Tariq Hasan Khan and DCO Karachi Shafiqur Rehman Paracha besides Town Nazims, EDOs and MD KWSB.

Mr Rind said great responsibility devolves upon elected representatives of people for solving the problems of people and for this purpose the officials should extend all cooperation to them.

He said he was well aware of the problems of Karachi and assured all cooperation of the provincial government for resolving the problems as pin-pointed by the city government, relating to water and sewerage, transport, electricity etc.

He emphasised the need for preparing effective schemes and their implementation with honesty and sincerity.

Referring to resource constraints, the CS called upon the city government to work on self-help concept for city’s beautification. He said in the developed countries, many problems are resolved with community participation.

Mr Rind announced that he would hold such meetings every quarterly and strengthen liaison with elected representatives for solution of their problems.

He said in the past senior authorities used to depend on reports of their officials, but now with the elected representatives having become active, one can be assured of having the knowledge about real problems and their solution through concerted measures.

Referring to the unrest among the officials as a result of transfer of power to elected representatives, the chief secretary said with the establishment of a high-powered committee, the concerned issues would be resolved.

Earlier, Nazim Naimatullah Khan welcomed the Chief Secretary on his visit to district government offices and made a special reference to law and order besides financial issues.

He said that City Nazim did not have the powers for posting and transfer of police officials as well the authority for reward and punishment and as such, he had no control over city police.

The chief secretary said he would take an initiative under police reforms in this respect.
