KARACHI, July 31: The city council on the last day of its 43rd session approved eight resolutions on various matters, and speakers laid emphasis on improvement of the education department of city government, besides demanding an end to interference by the Sindh government in the affairs of the city government.
The proceedings of the House commenced on Wednesday with a walkout, led by Razzaq Siddique, who stated that the convener had adopted a biased attitude. However, they joined the proceedings after some time.
Ghulam Abbas Talpur said that a school in Shah Faisal Town, established in 1961, had fallen prey to conspiracies of land-grabbers who are using the name of Nazim Karachi in their nefarious acts.
Siddique Rathore referred to queries by Razzaq Siddique, asking the details of schools and teachers of city government and said there were more primary schools in Larkana than in Karachi which was deplorable, whereas the worst thing was that no EDO comes to the council to answer the members queries.
He called for formation of a committee to bring EDOs to the council. However, a DO of education was present in the committee room to give details on any subsidiary question.
Shamim Mumtaz Wasi spoke about her discussion with EDO education Prof. Raees Alvi and said he was overburdened which shows that Karachi needs two EDOs on education — one for colleges and another for schools.
She criticized the Sindh education department for issuing directives to the colleges and interfering in the affairs of the city government and said corruption was being encouraged in different forms.
A number of speakers raised subsidiary questions on which Tariq Hasan asked all the three education committees of the House to seek answers from the department concerned.
However, she called upon the elected representatives to play an active role in their respective areas to examine the affairs of schools, parks and health facilities.
The House also approved a resolution presented by Rehana Afroze deploring the shifting of administrative control of GCT SITE to the Sindh government.
The House approved another resolution presented by Siddique Rathore calling for regularisation of 260 buildings whose case is pending with the KBCA, whereas the members speaking on the resolution demanded an early devolution of the KBCA.
The speakers deplored the malfunctioning and slackness of the KBCA which had caused a setback to the city.
The House also adopted two similar resolutions pertaining to sewerage problems in Karachi presented by Abdul Hafeez and Siddique Rathore and demanded that the UCs be allowed to recruit sanitary workers.
The House also adopted a resolution demanding an early repair of sewerage system.—PPI
