KARACHI, July 26: As many as 80 patients are getting the expensive intra-ocular lenses free of cost at the Spencer Eye Hospital in Lea Market.
The secretary local government, Major Qamaruz Zaman (retired), during his visit to the hospital on Friday was informed that besides the intra-ocular lenses, Dacrosysto Rhnostomy — a latest laser operation technique — was being used to prevent watering from eye, which could lead to complications and ultimate blindness. The secretary visited different wards to enquire about the patients.
Medical superintendent of the hospital, Dr Qazi Wasiq, informed the secretary that during the past six months more than 250 intra-ocular lenses had been given to the needy patients with the help of various philanthropists, NGOs and the zakat fund.
Dr Qazi said phaco emulsification, another modern technology, was also being used for cataract removal without surgery and suture, and all of these medical facilities were being provided to the patients free of cost.
He said the Spencer Eye Hospital, established in 1938 by some Parsi philanthropists, had been made a community-oriented services hospital.
Major Zaman also visited the out-patient department, lecture room and the operation theatre. He was informed that a memorial park after the name of the late M.H.Rizvi was being developed on the hospital premises for the facility of attendants of the patients.
The associate ophthalmic eye surgeon, Dr Niaz Brohi, who had been carrying out coronal transplantation with the aid of Sri Lankan government, was give the pride of performance by Sri Lanka.
Major Zaman appreciated the services of the doctors and their dedication to providing treatment to the deserving and the need people. He hoped that the hospital would continue to serve the people.
