ISLAMABAD, July 16: Water level in Rawal Dam, one of the main water reservoir for the residents of Rawalpindi rose to 1,734 feet on Tuesday.
An official of Irrigation and Power Department, Punjab said total capacity of the dam is about 1,752 feet while its dead level is 1,728 feet.
He said 20 million gallons of water was being supplied to the residents of Rawalpindi on daily basis. The present water level in the dam can meet the requirement of the residents for about 130 days, he added.
He said catchment area of the dam was about 102 square miles.
Tarbela Dam, the largest water reservoir of the country received 162,000 cusec water on Tuesday and release remained higher than inflow of 200,000 cusec.
According to the Indus River System Authority (IRSA), water position will further improve in this week at Tarbela and Mangla, major water reservoirs, owing to the impact of snow melting and the expected rains of monsoon season, according to the Met Office.
As per the official data released by IRSA, water level at Tarbela was recorded at 1,447.84ft, which was about 79ft higher than the dead level of the dam 1,369ft and at Mangla 1,194.60ft, which would be filled within a week to full capacity of 1,202ft.
Water release from Tarbela remained 200,000 and inflow was recorded at 162,800 cusec to meet the need of Punjab and Sindh as demand was high owing to long dry season in various parts of the provinces.
When asked about the water position at Mangla, an official of the monitoring cell said water position was stable at Mangla and there was no shortage of water at the Dam. Outflow from Mangla remained lower than inflow only 14,900 cusec against 21,000 cusec inflow.—APP
