ISLAMABAD, July 13: The Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC) has registered 104,110 doctors and 4,892 dental surgeons till June 30, says a press release here on Saturday.
The figure includes 14,337 medical specialists and 280 dental surgeons, who have acquired postgraduate medical or dental qualifications.
According to the press release, a good standing and experience certificates are issued by the PMDC for enabling the specialists and doctors for working abroad. “The PMDC is making efforts for the promotion of medical education and the certificates issued by the council are acknowledged by contemporary medical councils in England, Ireland, Australia, USA and other countries,” the press release added.
It said: “The council provides guidance and consultancy to all the medical and dental teaching institutions at the graduate and postgraduate levels to maintain standard of education on a par with that of reputed international medical, dental and research institutions.
“For this purpose, inspection teams consisting of principals, deans and senior professors of medical and dental colleges and universities visit different teaching institutions and hospitals throughout the country.
“MBBS degree holders registered in Punjab are about 40,161, among them are 27,152 male doctors and 13,009 lady doctors; in Sindh, out of the total 41,801 registered doctors, as many as 26,417 are male and 15,384 female; in the NWFP, the total number of registered doctor is 10,160 out of which 7,531 are male while 2,629 are lady doctors. The percentage of female doctors in the NWFP is less than the two provinces.
“Meanwhile, about 3,201 doctors have been registered in Baluchistan. Among them 2,259 are male and 942 are lady doctors. The figure of MBBS doctors in AJK is 1,717, male are 1,232 while lady doctors are 485,” the press release added.
The PMDC has also registered as many as 1,754 male and 24 lady doctors from foreign countries who possess degrees equivalent to MBBS have been registered till June 30.
As many as 11,569 male and 2,768 lady doctors have been registered as specialists or surgeon in the country.
