KARACHI, July 6: A suspected bandit was shot dead and another was wounded in what police claimed an ‘encounter’ in Joharabad on Saturday evening.
No policeman was wounded nor did any bullet hit the police van during the so-called encounter.
An official at the Joharabad police station told Dawn that the two bandits arrived at a shop, Master Chawal House in Block- 14, Dastagir, where they met resistance from the shopkeeper. Someone informed the police on Madadgar 15, and the police rushed to the spot. The bandits, sensing danger, drove away on their motorcycle.
The police chased them and near Saghir Centre in Block-16, the bandits allegedly opened fire at the police. The police returned the fire which resulted in the death of an alleged bandit on the spot. His accomplice suffered a bullet wound in his head and was shifted to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital from where he was referred to the JPMC. The identity of the alleged bandits could not be established immediately.
A passerby, Salahuddin, was also injured when he was hit by the motorbike the alleged bandits were riding. He was also shifted to the hospital.
The area people said that the police opened fire without being fired at. They said the police did not take the alleged bandits immediately to a nearby hospital and both the men were wounded and writhing in pain. The police later shifted them to a government hospital where one of them was declared dead on arrival.
BODY FOUND: The body of a young man was found in front of his Gulzar-i-Hijri home on Saturday.
The police said the body was shifted to a hospital for autopsy. The victim was identified as Mohammad Sabir, 19, hailing from Afghanistan. He suffered two bullet wounds in his face.
SUICIDE: A young man hanged himself at his Johrabad home late on Friday night.
The family informed the police who reached the house in Block-9, Dastagir Society and retrieved the body. The police said that Amir Zaheer, 34, hanged himself with a ceiling fan at a room of his house. The family knocked the door and when they got no response, they informed the police. Amir was unmarried. The cause of the suicide could not be ascertained immediately.
